Kandima Maldives, a resort creatively designed to challenge the status quo. Markedly different than the classic honeymooner resorts and it does stand out. It’s aimed at sports-loving, party-going groups as well as couples and families, and has a range of accommodation options, from affordable studios to luxury pool villas. Hit the waves with every water sport under the sun and let creativity run free in the in-house art studio. Welcome to the next generation resort – Kandima, where everything starts with a K!
The island is big, it takes few minutes to walk from one side to the other and around 20-30 minutes from one end to other end, but you can rent bikes and there is a buggy bus every 10-15 minutes, very smooth whatever option you choose.
The pool, beach bars and restaurants are located centrally, with the beach villas off to the south and the studios to the north. The beach stretches all along the eastern coast giving access to the shallow waters. The public areas are all bright with massive big cushions, white walls and loud music from the bars giving the outmost living atmosphere.
The feel is contemporary cool through-out the Island including its staff, unlike most other Maldivian resorts it does not get hung up on luxury or exclusivity. Most guests come here to have fun, play, have a good time and generally engage rather than close the doors and retreat.
Kandima is one of several resort islands in Dhaalu Atoll, surrounded by a large natural lagoon just half-hour flight from Malé followed by a 20-minute boat ride. You can obviously also travel by the more scenic seaplanes directly from Malé.
Once reached, staff will be waiting to greet you with a welcome drink and a cold towel to freshen up already at the jetty. The check-in is smooth as the winds from the sea, all necessary information will be given here too. It’s then a swift buggy bus to the room which is very helpful on a resort measuring three kilometers across.
Accommodation ranges from studios to villas, with private decks, airy bedrooms and huge bathtubs with ocean views. Villas come with their own Jacuzzis, while Ocean Pool Villas, a cut above, have their own private infinity pool overlooking the Indian Ocean.
Witnessing unharmful small-sharks swimming past while taking a dip in your own pool is one of those once-in-a-lifetime Maldives experiences. All Kandima’s rooms overlook and lead out onto the beach, perfect for a morning dip before breakfast.
The overall décor is modern, bright and fun, with bold cushions, pictures on the wall depicting sun and sea, wooden floors and light furniture. It all gives your a calm and breeze feeling.
Food & Beverages
Kandima has an impressive 10 restaurants and bars. Four of them are a la carte, full dining restaurants, two are buffets. They also have three bars, a deli and coffee shop.
It’s rare to find a resort where the food is consistently good at every restaurant. People usually find one they like and return to it again and again. But that can get boring after a few days. Kandima’s food choices are varied enough that you really can’t get bored, rather impossible. There are so many different dishes. Everything we ate was high-end restaurant quality. Not only was it well prepared and very tasty, the presentations was good and the service was quick and always with a smile. We loved that the chef comes out to say hello and ask how we were enjoying our meal.
That shows that they really care about your experience and want you to enjoy the food they made. Food is made with love and compassion, right?
The large main restaurant, Flavour (where we went most of the times), offers themed buffets at dinner, and the biggest breakfast spread imaginable in the mornings. Around 20 counters offer fruit, yoghurts, cheese, cold meats and freshly prepared pancakes. There’s full English with eggs cooked any way you want, and full Asian, with varieties of noodles and sushi and Full Indian with paratha and add-on to it. There is also a huge array of bread and pastries, from healthy seed and rye options to Middle Eastern sweet cakes. Coffees and teas are served at the table.
The food and Kandima’s chef’s, WOW. Top class and top notch. We promise that you will not be disappointed!
There are an incredibly amount of things to do at Kandima. We tried to do as many as we could.
Of course, you’ll want to do a bit of swimming and sun bathing, but when you’re done with the sun, you want there to be other things to do. At Kandima, it’s easy to figure out how to spend your time. They have a dive shop, called Aquaholics, that can help with everything from snorkel rentals, to scuba diving, jet skiing, swimming with dolphins, etc. You can go snorkeling from the pier for free, or rent kayaks and paddle boards, or even bicycles to ride around the island.
There is a full spa, esKape Spa, where you can spend a day of complete relaxation, with a massage room, a steam bath and sauna, a hairdresser, nail salon, and even yoga classes. There’s also a rather large workout facility, complete with Zumba classes, weights, a resistance pool, tennis and much more.
Some of the activities we did apart from beaching (of course) where parasailing, snorkeling, cycling around the Island, the spa (Kandima’s Signature massage – AMAZING!) and fishing among few other things. We love’d each and every activity and wish we could do more and of course some activities you would want to do again, like parasailing for example.
Hasta Luego – Till next time Kandima!
