Supreme excels at turning something deeply uncool into something impossibly sought-after that sneakerheads and box-logo loyalists will do anything to get their hands on. In recent years, that’s meant bricks, and the horror-movie guy with the pins in his head.

This week, it’s the absolute nadir: flames, the kind most commonly seen on bad cars. The streetwear giant announced its latest collaboration with Nike, and it’s every bit as hype-worthy and cheeky as you’d imagine.

Supreme dug deep into the Swoosh’s archive and picked the more-than-a-little-obscure Air Streak Spectrum Plus to remix and then covered the whole damn thing in flames. Supreme has upgraded the design with a mesh upper, Phylon midsole, and a mesh tongue with puffed-up logo.

Then the kings of collaboration threw in some reflective ‘World Famous’ logos on the suede heel panels for good measure. The Supreme exclusive comes in two colorways: a white sneaker with orange and red flames, and a black option with green and yellow flames.

Despite the No Fear-meets-Guy Fieri vibe or, hell, maybe because of it, this feels like the kind of irony-heavy sneaker everyone wants to get away with wearing in 2018. Supreme has always marched to the beat of its own drum. Weirdly, this may just be a case of the brand doing exactly but instead of creating a trend, stumbling headfirst into one.

Given the rebirth of the Nike Air Monarch as a fashion sneaker and the fact that even the legendary ‘Flames’ Vans Old Skools made an under-the-radar comeback last year, this sneaker seems right on the money.

If you’re skeptical of this totally lit sneaker, keep in mind that it was designed by the Best Menswear Designer of the Year. So if Supreme says that flames are cool, then it’s probably best to just go along with it.
